I’m really scratching my head over this one. I just changed the spark plugs on my 2012 Toyota Corolla, which I thought would help it run smoother since it’s been feeling a bit sluggish lately. I used the exact plugs recommended for my engine, gapped them correctly (at least I think I did), and made sure everything was torqued to spec. But after I finished the job and fired it up, the car is actually running worse than before! The idle is rough, and it feels like it’s misfiring or something when I accelerate. It’s not throwing any check engine lights yet, but it definitely doesn’t feel right.
I’m starting to wonder if I might have messed something up during the process. Could I have damaged a coil pack or not seated a plug correctly? I double-checked the connections, and everything seems to be in place, but I’m still worried I overlooked something. Is this normal after a spark plug change, like maybe it just needs to “settle” in, or could there be a bigger issue at play here?
I’m also wondering if I should have used anti-seize on the threads—some say yes, others say no—and now I’m paranoid that I either over-torqued them or didn’t get them tight enough. Has anyone else experienced their Corolla running rough right after changing spark plugs? Did it eventually smooth out on its own, or did you have to go back and adjust something? Any advice or similar experiences would be a huge help because I’m worried I might have done more harm than good with this seemingly simple maintenance task.
